Have you ever wondered how the food in your fridge stays fresh and cool? Refrigerators are amazing machines that help keep our fruits, vegetables, milk, and leftovers safe to eat. On a hot day, I like to stick my head in the fridge and feel the cold air against my face. I've always wondered how does a refrigerator actually work?


What Does a Refrigerator Do?

A refrigerator’s main job is to keep food cold. When food is cold, it stays fresh longer because cold temperatures slow down the growth of bacteria. Bacteria can make food go bad, smell yucky and make us sick if we eat them. So, by keeping food cold, refrigerators help us avoid wasting food and keep us healthy.


A refrigerator also keeps insects and pests out. When you open the refrigerator door, you'll find that you need to use some strength to yank the door open. That keeps insects (and sometimes your baby sibling) away from the food, keeping it safe.


How Does a Refrigerator Keep Things Cold?

You might think a refrigerator just blows cold air inside, but it actually uses a special process to take heat away and send it outside the fridge. This process is called cooling, and it works a bit like magic!


Here’s how it happens step by step:

1. The refrigerator moves a special liquid around

Inside the fridge, there is a special liquid called a refrigerant. This liquid can easily change from a liquid to a gas and back again. The refrigerant moves through tubes inside the fridge and outside the fridge in a cycle. When the liquid turns to gas, it takes in all the heat from the air inside the refrigerator, keeping it cool inside. Pretty cool!


2. The Compressor Squeezes the Refrigerant

What happens to this gas? Well, there is another device in the refrigerator called the compressor, and it is like the heart of the refrigerator. It squeezes the refrigerant gas, making it very hot and high-pressure. This hot gas then moves through coils on the back or bottom of the fridge.


3. The Refrigerant Cools Down and Becomes a Liquid

As the hot gas moves through the coils outside (not inside) the fridge, it cools down and turns back into a liquid. This process releases heat into the air around the fridge, which is why the back of the fridge feels like hot air is coming out from it.


4. The Cycle Starts Again

The liquid then goes back inside the refrigerator, and the whole cycle repeats. This continuous process keeps the fridge cold all the time.


This is the same idea that air conditioners use to keep our rooms cool!

  • Make sure the door seals are tight so cold air doesn’t escape.


Imagine if we didn’t have refrigerators. Food would spoil very fast, and we would have to buy fresh food every day. It would be hard to keep milk, cheese, and leftovers safe to eat. Refrigerators help us save money and reduce food waste by keeping food fresh longer.
