Ice Cream vs Gelato vs Sorbet vs Yoghurt

Can I have an ice cream, please?

Every kid loves ice cream. Whether you are a cookies and cream kind of person or a strawberry type, we all love ice cream. Have you every wondered why there are so many labels for the cold dessert?

First off, only Sorbet doesn’t have milk as an ingredient. It’s more of like a frozen icicle of sorts, that’s why they usually come in fruit flavors like orange, lemon (sour!), watermelon etc. When I eat them, I tend to think that I’m eating some really like textured fruits, with crunchy ice bits.

Then, there are those with milk like normal ice cream and gelato. My research tells me the main difference between the two is how much cream the makers add, with ice cream having more cream than a gelato. Taste wise, I can only tell the difference if I eat both side by side but I do feel that gelato has a ‘heavier’ feel in my mouth. Anyhow I think the difference between the two is only the price and how much chocolate they add in each! There are also delicious soy ice cream like the one IKEA serves, yum.

Lastly there is frozen yoghurt, which as my parents tell me is made of milk that has good bacteria in them. That may explain the slightly sour taste each time I eat it. Other than this, I don’t think there is much taste difference between this and ice cream.

So the next time your parents say you can’t have an ice cream, ask them if you can have a sorbet instead!
