A Dreamy Take on Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

When I first opened Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, I felt like I was stepping into a cozy little world made just for bedtime. It helped me feel relaxed and that the things in my room were all welcoming me to rest.

When I read it: Early pre-school

Story: Super, simple, calming

Illustration: Colourful with easy words

Overall (parents' view): Great book for bedtime, it helped the kids feel so calm and relaxed.

What Makes Goodnight Moon Special

Goodnight Moon doesn’t have a big adventure or lots of action. It focuses on saying goodnight to simple things in a quiet room. I remember it sounding almost like a song, with its rhyming and repeating words. The pictures and things were so much like what I had in my room, and that made me feel really comfortable.

The book’s describes a little green room with a fireplace, a red balloon, and a bowl of mush. Saying goodnight to each item helps me feel calm and ready for sleep. Just like my parents taught me, I sometimes follow the book to say good night to the things around me when I can't seem to fall asleep, or when I'm a little woken up after going to the toilet at night.

The Illustrations That Spark Imagination

The pictures in Goodnight Moon are simple but also detailed enough for me to pause my parents sometimes just to look more closely at the objects on the pages. For example, the little mouse that appears in the room is a fun surprise. It’s small and easy to miss at first, but once noticed, makes the story a little fun.

Saying Goodnight to Everything

I like the idea of saying goodnight to everything because it helps me feel that I'm safe in my room. Saying goodnight to the moon, the stars, and even the quiet old lady who is whispering “hush” creates a feeling of peace. I remember that my parents used to read it slowly while I sat on their lap. My soft pillows and blankets also made me feel absolutely ready to sleep.

My parents say that other dads and moms use Goodnight Moon as part of their bedtime routine because it helps their children wind down. The simple story makes it easier for kids to fall asleep without feeling scared or restless. The book’s focus on familiar objects and quiet moments makes it easy for me to understand the story.

Goodnight Moon feels like a gentle hug at the end of a busy day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I was in pre-school! (PS: I still read it sometimes even now)
